Renewing your 2026 extraordinary regularization permit: what to do now

The application window for Spain's 2026 extraordinary regularization (Royal Decree 316/2026) closed on 30 June 2026. If you obtained your permit, the next important step is to renew it on time and move to an ordinary residence permit. If you never applied, other routes are still open. This guide covers both situations.

Information reviewed in November 2026. Each decision may include its own conditions: always check yours.

First: find the expiry date of your permit

Check your decision letter and your TIE card. They show how long your permit is valid. That date drives the whole renewal calendar, so write it down and set a reminder several months ahead.

Renewal deadlines

Under the current Immigration Regulation, residence renewals are normally filed:

  • Within the 60 calendar days before the expiry date.
  • Or within the 90 calendar days after it, although filing late may lead to a fine.

Filing on time extends your permit until a decision is made, so you can keep working in the meantime.

What is usually checked at renewal

The authorities check that you still meet the conditions of the permit. The most common points are:

  • Employment or financial means: contracts, payslips, Social Security registration and contributions, or self-employed activity.
  • No criminal record in Spain.
  • Valid passport and an up-to-date municipal registration (empadronamiento).
  • In some cases, an integration report or school enrolment of dependent children.

Moving to an ordinary residence permit

The regularization was an exceptional route. When you renew, your case moves into an ordinary permit: employed or self-employed residence and work, or an arraigo permit, depending on your situation. Choosing the right route matters for your next renewal and for reaching long-term residence and, later, Spanish nationality.

If your application was refused or you never applied

  • Refusal: you have a deadline to file an appeal. Review the reasons in the decision as soon as possible; a documentary issue can often be fixed.
  • You missed the deadline: the extraordinary process is closed, but ordinary routes remain open. Social, socio-labour or training arraigo may fit your case.

Common mistakes

  • Waiting until the card expires before gathering documents.
  • Periods without Social Security contributions that cannot be explained.
  • Not updating your municipal registration or passport.
  • Choosing a renewal route that does not match your real employment situation.

Frequently asked questions

When do I have to renew the permit I got through the regularization? Normally within the 60 days before it expires or the 90 days after. Check the exact date on your decision and your TIE.
Can I keep working while my renewal is processed? Yes, if you file on time. Your permit is considered extended until the authorities decide.
What if I have not paid Social Security contributions the whole time? It depends on how long and why. Some situations can be justified or have alternative routes. It is worth reviewing with a lawyer before filing.
The regularization deadline has passed. Do I have any options? Yes. The extraordinary process is closed, but ordinary routes such as arraigo are still available. We assess which one fits your case.
